A beach bag packed with sunscreen, towels, and toys

For a family beach day, pack in three groups: sun protection (sunscreen, hats, shade), comfort (water, snacks, towels, a change of clothes), and play (a few sand toys and a ball). Bring more water and sunscreen than you think you'll need, and keep a small first-aid kit in the bag.

The beach-day checklist

  • Sunscreen (and reapply plan)
  • Hats and UV-protective clothing
  • Shade: umbrella or pop-up tent
  • Water and easy snacks
  • Towels and a change of clothes each
  • A few sand toys and a ball
  • Small first-aid kit
  • Wet bag for sandy clothes
