Age-Appropriate Chores for Kids

A guide to age-appropriate chores that build responsibility without the power struggles.

The best chores for a child match what they can do at their stage: toddlers put toys in a bin, preschoolers set napkins and feed pets, and school-age kids make their bed and help with laundry. Start small, keep expectations realistic, and focus on effort and routine over perfection. Chores build independence and a sense of contributing to the family.

Chore ideas by age

Toddlers (2–3)

  • Put toys in a bin
  • Wipe up small spills
  • Put clothes in the hamper

Preschool (3–5)

  • Set napkins and forks
  • Feed a pet with help
  • Match socks

School-age (6+)

  • Make their bed
  • Help load and unload laundry
  • Clear and wipe the table

Make it routine, not a battle

Tie chores to an existing habit (after breakfast, before screen time) so they become automatic rather than a nightly negotiation.
