School supplies laid out on a table

A good back-to-school checklist covers three things at every grade: supplies, routines, and paperwork. Younger grades lean on labeled basics and a set morning routine; older grades add organization tools, activity forms, and more independence. Start about two weeks out to avoid the last-minute rush.

The basics for every grade

  • Confirm the school supply list
  • Re-establish a bedtime and morning routine
  • Complete enrollment/health forms
  • Label clothing and gear for younger kids
  • Set up a homework and backpack drop spot

By grade band

Elementary

  • Labeled supplies and water bottle
  • Practice the morning routine before day one
  • A visible calendar for the family

Middle & high school

  • Planner or digital calendar system
  • Locker and binder organization
  • Activity, sports, and device paperwork
