How to choose a kids art easel

What age a kids easel is for

Buy the age the listing prints. On this page, ages 3+ or ages 3 and up, or age 3 and up, is the line on the Melissa & Doug standing easel, the Melissa & Doug magnetic tabletop easel, the Easy Playhouse tabletop easel, the Crayola wooden easel, the Step2 All Around Easel for Two, the Step2 art center, the Hape easel (the bullet says suitable for 3Y and above), and the Melissa & Doug accessory set's title. The accessory-set bullet also says a gift for 3- to 10-year-olds. The Step2 Flip & Doodle title says for toddlers 2+ years old. That is the youngest numbered age in this pack. A 2-year-old is inside that 2+ line and is not inside a listing that says 3+.

Two listings print more than one age line, and both should be read as written. The Tiny Land title says 3 heights for ages 3-12. A feature bullet says designed for kids ages 3 to 8. This page is not choosing 12 or 8 for you. The listing gives both. The Melissa & Doug paper-roll 3-pack title says ages 3+. A bullet says it makes a great gift for ages 2 to 102. That second line is the listing's gift sentence. It is not a second developmental grade we are treating as a reason to hand the rolls to a toddler who still mouths paper. CDC says milestones are things most children, 75 percent or more, can do by a given age, and that the checklists are not a substitute for validated screening. An easel does not teach those milestones. If you are worried a child is not meeting them, CDC says you know your child best, and not to wait: talk with the doctor and ask about developmental screening.

A 5-year-old is inside every ages 3+ line on this page, and inside the Step2 2+ line. Several easels here are double-sided, so one child, or two, can use two of those surfaces without buying a second easel. The listing has to say which side is which. We are not guessing from a stock photo.

The Hape listing says the easel is compatible with the Hape Art Paper Roll, SKU E2015, sold separately, and it prints that roll's L by W as 787 by 23.22 with an inch mark. The Melissa & Doug tabletop listing says a magnetic dry-erase board. Easy Playhouse says a magnetic whiteboard. Tiny Land says a magnetic drawing board on one side. Crayola says a magnetic dry-erase side. Step2 All Around says a magnetic dry-erase board. Step2 Flip & Doodle says a magnetic dry-erase board. Step2 art center says a magnetic dry-erase board. Chalkboard: the standing Melissa & Doug, the tabletop Melissa & Doug, Easy Playhouse, Tiny Land (magnetic chalkboard), Crayola, Step2 All Around, and the Step2 art center. The Flip & Doodle listing we checked does not say chalkboard. The Hape listing says a transparent drawing board you can draw on directly, and that it wipes with soap and water. It does not say dry-erase, chalkboard, or magnetic.

Magnetic surfaces and small magnetic pieces

Magnetic means two different things in these bullets. A magnetic board is a surface that holds magnets. Loose magnetic letters, numbers, or foam pieces are small objects that come in the box. The Melissa & Doug tabletop easel includes 36 magnetic letters and numbers, and the title says the dry-erase board is magnetic. Easy Playhouse includes magnetic letters and numbers, and says the whiteboard is magnetic. It does not say the chalkboard is magnetic. Tiny Land says a magnetic chalkboard and a magnetic drawing board, and the bullets we checked do not say loose letters are included. Crayola says the dry-erase side is magnetic, and does not say letters are included. Step2 All Around includes 94 soft foam magnets, and says the dry-erase side is magnetic. The Flip & Doodle and the art center say the dry-erase board is magnetic and do not list loose magnets. The Melissa & Doug standing easel does not say magnetic in the title or the bullets we used. The Hape easel does not say magnetic. Where the listing is silent, do not assume the board holds a magnet.

Small pieces are the safety part, and it is general guidance, not a test of these ASINs. CPSC's small-parts page says products intended for children under 3 that present a choking, aspiration, or ingestion hazard because of small parts are banned under 16 CFR part 1501. A small part is an object that fits entirely inside the small-parts cylinder. These easel listings are age-graded by the makers. Most say 3+. That grade is not a cylinder test we ran. A younger sibling can still be under 3. Keep magnetic letters, foam magnets, chalk, and marker caps away from a child who still mouths toys. We did not measure the letters or the 94 foam magnets. The listings do not print their size.

CPSC's magnet page is about a different hazard: high-powered magnets. CPSC says they are a safety risk from toddler age through the teen years, that injuries from ingestion and inhalation are serious, and that when two or more magnets are swallowed they can attract each other internally. The same page says those high-powered magnets are not ordinary refrigerator magnets and are stronger than magnets used in toys. We are not calling the letters in these easel sets high-powered magnets. We also are not calling them harmless because a listing says the board is magnetic. If a magnet comes loose from a board, or a child mouths the loose letters, take them away and get medical help if you think magnets were swallowed. CPSC's symptoms to watch for include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Building sets made of larger magnetic tiles are a different product. Wood or plastic

Wood and plastic are the two materials these listings actually name. The wooden listings are both Melissa & Doug easels, the Easy Playhouse easel, the Tiny Land easel, the Crayola easel, and the Hape easel. Tiny Land says natural pine wood. Hape says anti-corrosive wood and describes the easel as made for outdoor use. We are not turning that into a claim that it stands up to weather, and we are not repeating a slogan about the test of time. The plastic listings are the three Step2 models. Each of those bullets says double-walled plastic construction. We are not repeating the finish slogan in the durability bullet. Double-walled plastic is the construction fact.

Cleaning is whatever the listing bothers to say. The three Step2 bullets say to use disinfectant wipes or household cleaners. The Hape bullet says the transparent board is easy to clean with soap and water. Easy Playhouse says to wipe with a wet eraser, and notes that the chalk is dustless so it needs a wet eraser or a damp soft cloth. The wooden Melissa & Doug, Crayola, and Tiny Land listings we checked do not give a cleaning method. Do not invent one. Plastic that the listing says you can wipe is the practical pick when the easel will be used with washable markers and you want the frame to wipe down. A wooden easel that folds flat is the practical pick when the problem is floor space, not wipe-down. Those are different jobs. A wooden easel is not automatically sturdier. We did not load any of them.

Step2 Great Creations Art Center says a 360-degree design for multiple kids, with a desk and a double-sided board. Those are the listings that talk about more than one child. The Melissa & Doug standing easel, the Crayola easel, the Tiny Land easel, the Flip & Doodle desk, the Hape easel, and the Melissa & Doug tabletop easel do not say two children can use them at once. Hape's bullets talk about friends and a double-sided easel in a play sentence. We are not turning that into a capacity number. A double-sided board can still be one child's board that you flip.

Siblings also change the small-parts problem. The letters, the foam magnets, and the chalk are still small when an older child is inside the age grade and a younger one is not. We did not clock it. The Melissa & Doug easels, the Easy Playhouse easel, the Crayola easel, and the Hape easel do not state an assembly step in the bullets we checked. Read the paper that arrives. If the live page adds a tool list, believe the live page.

Climbing is the failure mode to plan for, because a standing frame looks like a ladder to a child who already climbs a couch. If the apartment cannot hold a standing frame between art sessions, start with the tabletop that says fold-flat, or with Tiny Land, and measure the closet against the heights Tiny Land prints.

Trays and bins are storage for supplies, not a promise the easel itself gets smaller. The standing Melissa & Doug easel has 2 trays. Step2 All Around has trays and a storage bin.
