I am worried about preemie milestones. How long should it take for a preemie to catch up to their peers?

Preemie milestones are generally different from the milestones of other children until they reach about two years old. Of course, this is not always the case. Preemie milestones may take longer beyond this guideline. Other two-year-olds might be using small phrases, but your little one could be struggling. This is not necessarily abnormal.

When you begin to worry that your child is far behind, begin counting from your baby’s due date, not the actual date of birth. This provides a more accurate picture of where your preemie should be. Your 18-month-old who was born three months early is likely closer to a 15-month-old in terms of development.
