Tips For Packing A Healthy Snack Bag


IMG_0838Lil Man and I are huge snackers. Hubby not so much, but Lil Man and I can’t leave the house without a ‘snack’ bag. In the past, my snack back usually consisted of ‘orange snack crackers shaped like fish’, pretzels, packaged cookies or ready-made peanut butter or cheese crackers. Basically any thing that was already pre-packaged and easy to just toss into a bag was what I would take with us.

I was surprised this past weekend when I was packing us a snack bag for a family trip that my first thought was to choose healthier options.  I’m finally really seeing some life style changes (#FitFridayConfessions – Eat The Rainbow). And I was even more surprised at how easy it was to pack healthy options such as grapes, bananas, dark chocolate, and organic snacks.

And instead of feeling guilty that I was giving my child something full of chemicals or high processed food, it felt great to know that he was eating ‘real’ food especially since we planned on eating some not so healthy food once we arrived at our destination.  My family has a long way to go on this road to healthy eating, but I’m so glad that I am working toward getting us away from processed food and closer to eating real food. As the summer approaches, we are on the road even more, so healthy snacks will be a must have for us.

Here are a few tips when packing a snack bag:

Fruit – Make sure that you wash the fruit before packing. Cut fruit into bite size pieces for smaller children.

Napkins – sometimes healthier options like fruit can be a little messier than pre-packaged snacks.

Dark Chocolate – we like squares of dark chocolate when we need something a little sweet. Chocolate can melt so keep that in mind. But overall, I’ve found that it packs well and will hold up to a day trip.

Nuts – Peanuts and Mixed nuts are easy-to-pack items. However, keep in mind that they can be a choking hazard for smaller children.

Squeeze Pouches – Read the ingredients to make sure that they are ‘real’ and not added chemicals, but squeeze pouches are easy to transport and a favorite with Lil Man.

And don’t forget water! We each have a to-go cup, and will refill it as needed.
