Q: I’m pregnant. Can I still change my cat’s litter box?

Answer: Pregnant women are often told that they should not be changing the cat’s litter box. The reason for this is that cat feces can cause a parasitic infection known as taxoplasmosis. If you become infected while you are pregnant then you may pass the infection to your developing baby.

While taxoplasmosis might make you feel like you have the flu, there are also times where there are no symptoms at all. Unfortunately, a developing fetus may still experience the side effects. This could include brain damage.

There is no need to get rid of Fluffy just yet. Indoor cats are not at all likely to carry taxoplasmosis. You can also ask somebody else in your home to change the litter box.
