Bedsharing is a controversial topic. Experts recommend against bedsharing for parents who are not breastfeeding or who might use substances that impair the ability to wake up naturally. This is also the case for beds that might include other small children. Premature infants are also recommended to have their own sleeping surface. Co-sleeping with a different surface in the same bedroom is the recommended practice by most experts because it allows for better protection against SIDS and interruption of breathing.
Breastfeeding is much easier when the mother and child are sharing a sleeping surface. This allows both child and mother the rest they need without the sacrifice of feeding.
