Make Playgrounds Your Gym

I don’t know about you, but there are certain times of the year that my husband just isn’t available to help out as much (especially in the mornings). So it’s not always easy to get in my workouts.  And although I do have a traditional gym membership, sometimes going to the gym just isn’t feasible either.

After our harsh winter, Lil Man wants to be outside as much as possible. I can’t say that I blame him.  We are frequently finding ourselves at the playground. I realized that I got a workout by pushing him on the swings, and lifting him up and down on the equipment.

But, then I also realized that I could use the equipment as a workout for me. A few weeks ago, I could barely hold myself up on the monkey bars. This week I was able to go across them twice. Steps can be used to walk up and down (think of it as a manual stair stepper). Steps to the equipment  can also be used to do calf raises.

Swings aren’t just for swinging. Put your feet on the seat of the swing and do decline push-ups, pikes or planks. Put your forearms on the seat of the swing and do planks. Most playground equipment has different levels. I’ve found that I can usually find a good place to do ‘dips’.

Bringing a ball to the playground is also an added bonus, but don’t worry if you don’t have a ball.  Chasing shadows makes for great agility drills.  It’s amazing how quick a child can dart back and forth while trying to catch your shadow or keep you from catching his. Not only was it fun, but we both were exercising.

Don’t be afraid to think outside the box when it comes to working out. I try to include Lil Man as much as possible. He loves it as much as I do.
