Time! Time! Some days it just seems like there isn’t enough time – not enough time to do the laundry, clean up the enormous pile of toys, do the dishes, workout, spend quality time with Lil Man, run errands and the list goes on and on.
I am a planner; therefore I make plans. I try to schedule in advance what I can. I can’t function without my calendar. I even color code it. It looks so nice and pretty. Everything is so neat and organized and scheduled like clockwork. I silently say, I’ve got this!
Then Monday morning rolls around, and I wake up to Lil Man puking. No school. No gym. No grocery shopping. And now I can add extra laundry to the piles of dirty laundry already piled high. Dinner? What dinner. I’ve been cleaning up vomit all day. And my nice and pretty calendar is now non-existent. The entire week has just been rearranged in an instant.
Thankfully, we’ve only had one stomach bug this year. However, the weather has been a different story. We’ve experienced school delay after school delay, and if you count on preschool time to get things accomplished, then you feel my pain. So what’s a Mom to do?
You know how in an emergency situation, medical staff will set up a triage? Well, that’s what I do when something disrupts my plan. I prioritize what has to be done, and the lower priority items have to wait for another day.
This is how I survive, because the reality is, there will always be bumps along the way. It’s called life.
If I can’t make it to the gym, I will substitute (if possible) a workout that I can do at home. If my son is sick, then his needs take priority over everything else. Or if we’ve just been super busy and I can feel that he needs some one-on-one time with me, I will push aside some of the other items on my to-do list.
One thing that Motherhood has definitely taught me is that you have to be flexible, and that you just have to roll with the punches.
