Before I became a mother, I had all these ideas in my head about how it would be. I imagined late night feedings, teaching a tiny human how to live, and being a little overwhelmed at times. I’d be the mom that would always have baked goodies in the house, the house would be clean, I would be a stay-at-home mom and we would live, comfortably. No where in this scenario did I ever think of using cloth diapers.
With our first child, we used disposable diapers. No big deal. Everyone uses them, right? We “saved” money by purchasing Target brand diapers. They were cheaper than Huggies or Pampers and we needed cheap! We even went on to have another baby. Two babies in diapers. Oh my goodness. We were spending so much money every week on diapers and wipes. It was ridiculous. We got into a situation where we had everything paid for, groceries in our fridge, but not enough disposable diapers to last us until payday. Panic settled in. What were we going to do?!
I had heard about cloth diapers but knew, or at least thought, it was not for me. I hated wiping dirty little bums enough! But desperate times, called for desperate measures. I have a sister-in-law who already cloth diapered. We decided that it was our best option that week. She loaned us a few covers and showed me that I could use a receiving blanket. Lord knows I had tons of those just laying around! I was doing the “diaper” laundry once a day and found out how easy and simple it was to wash diapers! After 4 days of this, I sat down and talked to my husband.
