My 7-year-old is afraid of thunderstorms. What can I do to help?

Children who are afraid of thunderstorms may require special care during times of rough weather. The first thing you want to do is offer hugs and reassurance with kind words. Becoming frustrated will not help the problem. Additionally, you might help your child find comfort by building a special fort or by putting some music on headphones. It is also wise to teach your child exactly why thunder and lightning occur so that he or she feels as if there is more control. While you might sense a lot of fear now, this is actually a common fear that will dissipate over time.
