Toddlers love to be independent and do things themselves. By the time they are two and a half years old, they like to make their own choices about what to eat, what they want to do, and what they want to wear. At this age, parents and toddlers can have a standoff with the battle of wills. Developing a sense of fashion can take time and requires expert advice from mom, so check out these tips to help eliminate fashion battles with your toddler getting dressed each morning:
Buy mix and match items – This not only gives several outfit options, but it also allows your toddler to pick and choose clothes he is willing to wear and still match. If left to their own devices, tots would dress in clashing colors because the contrast looks “cool” to them.
Provide limited choices. Allow them to make a lot of little choices so they feel like they are in control of what they are wearing. Ask if they’d like to wear their blue pants or red pants and follow up with two choices of shirts based on their pant choice. This way, they look put together before leaving the house.
Set rules. Toddlers may become fixated on wearing one or two items all of the time. Allow them to wear the items one or two days a week, but make a rule that they have to be laundered between being worn. If it is a fairy dress or a pirate shirt, make it clear they can only wear those items on certain days when appropriate clothing doesn’t matter.
Listen to their preferences. If the seams inside of socks bother them, allow them to wear their socks inside-out. If tags irritate them, cut them off. Some textures may be less comfortable for kids to wear, so let them help choose clothes when you go shopping.
Have a creative day. Some kids really have an artistic bent and like to experiment with colors and patterns. Allow them to have a crazy dress-up day once a week where they can design their own outfits.
Toddlers need to be able to make choices, as it helps them build autonomy and self-confidence. Allowing them to have a say in what they wear each day is vital in helping them develop their own sense of style. Limit the choices and guide their options to help them develop their sense of independence and reduce the battle of the wills each morning.
